Humans are like eggs trying to avoid a collision.
Pretty Reckless are my favourite contemporary rock band, great songs, great musicianship and the incomparable Taylor Momsen spreading the love on vocals. So after listening on my computer and in the car mostly, I bought the CD of ‘Light Me Up’, to say I’m disappointed with the album sonically is a massive understatement. Why are loads of current producers incapable of producing smooth musical treble frequencies? The top end on most of the tracks is almost un-listenable to my ears, it’s just a fizzing noise with no separation between the sounds occupying the same space. The vocals are often not de-essed and the cymbals are so badly recorded or poor triggered samples.
I know what the solution is but it involves relearning just how attractive a warm sound field is compared to one that hurts your ears. Maybe the producer should search out some mature engineers. That aside a great album, if you don’t play it too loud – as I like to.
